The Hammer

Desperate for entertainment, my friend Dave and I narrowed down our movie choices to "Run Fat Boy Run" and "21". Then he remembered that the Adam Carolla flick "The Hammer" had gotten decent reviews. We went for it and both were pleasantly surprised.
Nice, sweet movie about boxing with a little romance thrown in. Carolla makes a convincing leading man. Don't beleive me? It's got a 72% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Here's a couple of sample reviews:
Matt Zoller Seitz, The New York Times:
"The Hammer has dry wit and unforced working-class swagger, and hits some surprising emotional notes…[and] builds it to a payoff that’s as unexpected as it is moving."
Daily Variety:
"Exchanges between Carolla and Juergensen certainly do not lack for chemistry, recalling the physicality and heightened sexual edge that informed helmer George Cukor’s “Pat and Mike,” that greatest of sports-themed romantic comedies."
Check it out.

Ten Movies 2007
Better late than never I suppose. My top ten flicks from last year.
10. A Fistful of Quarters: The King of Kong
Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter, Anton Chigur, Billy Mitchell.

9. The Savages
How can Phillip Seymore Hoffman manage three great films in one year (this, Charlie Wilson's War and When the Devil Knows You're Dead) when most actors can't do that many in their entire careers?
8. Ratatouille
Brad Bird plus Pixar equals greatness.
7. Superbad
Cock drawing montage. Nuff said.

6. There Will Be Blood
Daniel Day Lewis drinks my milkshake.
5. No Country for Old Men
Anton Chigur is one cold motherfucker.
4. Zodiac
Most chilling quote of the year: Norbit, one Oscar... Zodiac, zero Oscars.

3. Knocked Up
How can Judd Apatow manage three great films in one year (this, Superbad and Walk Hard) when most writers/directors/producers can't do that many in their entire careers?
2. Michael Clayton
I just like watching great actors work with great scripts. It's really exhilarating.
1. Once
I've watched this about 4 times since December. Every time they get to "When your mind's made up", I get goosebumps. Bonus toptenage moment: Once's Oscar win and the two speeches.

All the same excuses apply... I've been busy at work, I'm a dad now, etc, etc. I just can't seem to post regularly. Apologies.
