Top
Ten Albums 2008

Finally weighing in with my top ten albums
from last year. Overall a pretty good year for music.
10. Dewey Cox - Walk Hard original motion
picture soundtrack
John C. Reilly sings some great, funny songs by Mike Viola, Marshall
Crenshaw and Judd Apatow. The great thing is, some of the tracks
are actually poignant.
9. Crowded House - Time on Earth
The thing here is, I really, really wish I liked this album more.
I love Crowded House to pieces and just the fact that they'rereunited
makes me esctastic, but this one doesn't measure up to Neil
Finn's solo stuff.
8. Feist - The Reminder
Another strong outing from Leslie Feist.
7. Ben Lee - Ripe
Lee keeps making album after album of impressive pop music. Consistent
writing and album releases make his work something to look
forward to on an almost annual basis.
6. Radiohead - In Rainbows
This was one of my favorite discs of the year. But I didn't pay
a red cent for it thanks to Radiohead's pay-what-you-want scheme.
It paid off. Why? Because I've never liked Radiohead. There.
There's my secret shame. The indie scene's poster boys and
I didn't like them. Now, I do.
5. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
2007 was the year that Spoon made some big strides into mainstream
popularity (their multiple tracks on the "Stranger than Fiction"
soundtrack didn't hurt).
4. Loudon Wainwright - Strange Weirdos
Essentially the second movie soundtrack to a Judd Apatow flick
on this list (Weirdos is the soundtrack from last Summer's
"Knocked Up"). The theme of parenthood helped make this one
of Wainwright's best albums in years.
3. Nick Lowe - At My Age
Parenthood seems to have agreed with Lowe as well. A solid effort
that keeps up the streak from his last l.p. The Convincer.
2. Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklights
I know a lot of hardcore fans hated this album, but I loved that
they departed from their indie rock roots to make a pop disc.
And goddammit... synthesizers!
1. Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - Once
motion picture soundtrack
Heartbreakingly beautiful. I bought this on iTunes after seeing the trailer for
the film and about 4 months before I ever saw the movie.
Next post, I'll lay down my top ten movies
of last year. I spent most of the last six weeks catching up
on the year end Oscar hopefuls. Loads of good flicks this past
year.
Dropping in a plug for my friend Jay's website,
The
Seven Million Dollar Man. jay had a serious accident
with a high-speed train over a year ago and this site chronicles
his trip back.
