"Top
Ten Albums 2006... Best Movies"

It was a pretty good year for music. Nothing
spectacular, but a lot of solid stuff, including two kick-ass
debut albums. Here's my best of the year.
10. Comfort of Strangers-Beth Orton
"Worms don't dance; they don't have the balls". YES!
9. The Fountain original score-Clint Mansell
Haunting and moving. Mansell and Aronofsky just click.
8. The Greatest-Cat Power
Her greatest.
7. The Crane Wife-The Decemberists
The top album of most of the music blogosphere.
6. White Bread Black Beer-Scritti Politti
Comeback of the year. And Green got over his 20 year case of
stage fright to tour again.
5. The Avalanche-Sufjan Stevens
Even his outtakes are fucking brilliant. Stevens was supposed
to be taking the year off, but he still managed to release
SIX Cd's of music.
4. The Beautiful Lie-Ed Harcourt
Ed comes through again.
3. Alright, Still- Lily Allen
Her album didn't officially come out until this month, but
I've been listening to it as an import for almost 6 months.
Self-assured and cocky with the hooks to back it all up.
2. The Life Pursuit-Belle & Sebastian
Brilliant pop songs.
1. Robbers & Cowards-Cold War Kids
This year's darlings of the music bloggers. There was definitely
some CWK backlash at the end of the year, but I was just
psyched to hear a new band make music with such confidence.
Honorable mentions:
Born in the U.K.-Badly Drawn Boy
Ben Kweller-Ben Kweller
Pearl Jam-Pearl Jam
Let's Get Out of This Country-Camera Obscura
Top single of the year, without a doubt: Gnarls
Barkley's "Crazy". Ubiquitous.
---------------------
Top movies? Well, since
I had a baby this year I missed a load of them. But here's
a bunch I loved. in no particular order:
The Departed
Children of Men
Pan's Labyrinth
Casino Royale
United 93
V for Vendetta
Thank You For Smoking
Cars
Most overrated movie of the year and likely
winner for best picture: Little Miss Sunshine. Fun, but isn't
it just Vacation with a gay uncle thrown in?

"State
of the Union"

So I noticed tonight's SOTU address is airing
opposite Fox's American Idol. If only we could do a mash-up
of televison programs, watch both at once. How gratifying might
it be to see Bush facing Idol's Simon Cowell?
A
politically weakened President Bush implored a skeptical
Congress Tuesday night to embrace his unpopular plan to
send more U.S. troops to Iraq, saying it represents the
best hope in a war America must not lose. “Give it
a chance to work,” he said.
Simon: "Your presidency has been atrocious. I can't believe
anyone's ever told you you can govern. Your entire performance
was off-key. Absolutely horrendous... off you go!"
Or what if The Apprentice's Donald Trump was overseeing the
government...
“Our
country is pursuing a new strategy in Iraq — and
I ask you to give it a chance to work,” Bush
said in his sixth State of the Union address.
"George, you're a good guy to drink with, but I don't
see you running my country. In fact, I see you running it into
the ground. You're supposed to manage the team, but the entire
country lost faith in you. So, I hate to say... George... YOU'RE
FIRED! Now, go on... get out of here."
Rating triumph!

Apologies for the lack
of updates as of late. As you can imagine, my time to blog
is somewhat limited now with a new baby.
In my next update, I hope to have my top ten
albums of 2006 up. May forego the top ten movies though...
not many opportunities to sneak out for a flick now.
